With the launch of a new web version, Snapchat users can use their favorite mobile features like snapping, messaging, and video conferencing on their computers for the first time.
Using Snapchat for the Web, you may send messages to your contacts or make phone calls from your computer. The web platform will initially be available only to Snapchat Plus subscribers, and it is the first big feature introduction since Snap launched its subscription tier in June.
These countries’ customers will get priority access to this new service. Only Google’s Chrome browser and not Apple’s Safari can use Snapchat.
Snapchat’s head of messaging products, Nathan Boyd, believes a web option makes sense because customers are more likely to access the service via a desktop computer. Snap’s AR Lenses are coming shortly to Snapchat for Web, allowing users to chat and phone in the same window.
Boyd stated that Snap intends to make more of its products available on the web over time, given the increased use of computers during the pandemic and the impending start of the new school year.
As an AR platform for its Lenses, Snap wants to be seen as more than just a private messaging and phone service. As a result, Snapchat is now in direct rivalry with Discord and Meta’s WhatsApp, both of which are now available on the desktop version.
One hundred million Snapchat users call each other monthly, spending an average of 30 minutes daily on the app. Chatting is generally the last thing individuals do before shutting down Snapchat, Boyd claims.
In an interview, he states, “We are continually searching for ways to reach our people where they are.” “It just felt like an opportunity that had not been taken advantage of.”
The fact that the web expansion is being made available to subscribers shows that the corporation is serious about using the paid tier to generate revenue. As the company’s top executives warned that revenue growth is slowing, Snap is under more pressure than ever to monetize its 332 million daily active users than Twitter. Ads are Snap’s primary source of revenue, but the desktop version’s goal is to entice returning users.
